The Prevention of Illegal Eviction Act was introduced to regulate the process of evicting unlawful occupiers from land, with the aim of balancing private property rights with the constitutional protection against arbitrary eviction. Before PIE was enacted, evictions could be carried out under the common law, often without safeguards for vulnerable occupants.
